Gwen Perkins

Gwen Perkins has been a teacher or administrator in various public school systems throughout the United States for 30 years. She retired as Director of Grant Programs for children/families aged birth through 5 in East Hartford Public Schools. Her emphasis on child abuse prevention and effective parenting has led to a specialty of working with families at risk throughout her career. Her experience with at-risk families and children will benefit LCS as it continues to expand on the programs and services available to families. "Ï have found that assisting children from families in need is a most fulfilling way to give back to any community. The Lawrence Community Shelter serves Lawrence in such a variety of ways that it offers opportunities that go in both directions - many times the helper gains as much and those being helped. I am enthused about the possibilities for the Shelter in the future, and am proud to be a part of it."

Since moving to Lawrence in 2004, she has been an active volunteer in the community. She has worked with CASA, Shelter Inc., Fairy Godmother Fund, and Hilltop Early Childhood Center. She is a Governor's appointee to the Kansas Children's Cabinet and Trust Fund. She's also a member of Women Philanthropists for KU and the American Bouvier Rescue League.
