The Staff of LCS
Staff Biographies
Sally Bartlett, Supervising Case Manager
Sally grew up in Lawrence. She majored in psychology and women’s studies at the University of Kansas and worked at Lawrence Head Start and at Headquarters while she was in college. Sally’s career background is in juvenile corrections. She was employed by the Shawnee County Department of Corrections as a counselor and case manager for 25 years. She has also worked for Juvenile Intake and Assessment. She has been at LCS for four years and loves her work. She is inspired by the guests who try so hard in the face of such adversity. She believes LCS employs some of the finest people she has ever met, and that Loring’s direction empowers our vision for the future. Her time at LCS has been one of the most gratifying experiences of her life.
Brian Blevins
Brian has been with LCS as an employee or supporter for over 6 years. He has currently been working with the shelter as a permanent member of the staff for over 3 years. He is a Junior at the University of Kansas, seeking a degree in Communications, with a minor in Psychology and English. Brian is also trained in media and provider relations for a lobbyist group called FAVOR, (Faces and Voices of Recovery), an organization dedicated to the support of Recovery from Substance-Use Disorders.
Jesse Rowley
Jesse Rowley is a KU student who will be starting the Social Welfare program in the Fall of 2010. Jesse got involved with LCS in the Fall of 2009 through a pre-social welfare class that required 20 hours of volunteer service that he started in August of 2009 and has been with LCS ever since. Jesse is now a part time employee, covers shifts for other monitors, and did emergency overflow-overnight shifts during winter-break. Jesse is Certified in Service Learning through KU and attends case-management and staff meetings in an effort to further understand and provide what he can for the guests at the shelter. Loring was the first person Jesse met at LCS and that first impression is what Jesse says made him really believe in the mission of the shelter.
Matthew Stephens
Matt Stephens graduated from Kansas State University in 2006 with a bachelor’s degree in Social Work. Matt has been employed at LCS for 1 1/2 years as a night monitor. Before joining LCS Matt worked at Pawnee Mental Health Center in Manhattan Kansas, Prairie View Mental Health in McPherson Kansas, and Developmental Services of Northwest Kansas in Atwood Kansas. Matt is currently holds a LBSW in the State of Kansas.
Arnell Walker, Coordinator of Employment Programs
Arnell became involved with LCS as an Employment Manager to support guests who are wanting and interested in employment. She has previously worked at Cottonwood in a similar position, and in the Kansas City, Kansas school district before that. Many guests have successfully gotten jobs and are still employed. Employed guests enroll in a savings program designed to commulate monies needed for deposit: for housing, utilities, and/or unpaid bills that may become a hinderince for moving forward. Many guests are still employed and have moved into their own apartments/houses and are managing very well. LCS offers follow-up services to all guests for longevity and success. Loring's strength, guidance, and kindness have proven successful for guests and staff. His leadership shows the rest of the staff that the main goal of LCS is supporting persons and families at a time in their lives when they can not support themselves, while encouraging them to move forward on a path to support themselves.
