Through the houses we build, hope is restored and lives are changed as the cycle of need is broken. How we build is just as important as what we build. Habitat is not a give-away program. Our homes are built in partnership with the homeowners. They must make a $500 down payment and contribute 375 hours of "sweat equity" labor, working on their home and other Lawrence Habitat homes. By investing themselves in the building process, homeowners gain self-reliance, self-esteem and new skills. Their down payments and monthly mortgage payment go into a revolving "Fund for Humanity" that is used to help build more homes.
