PAST EVENT UPDATES

  • COOL NEWS: We received the following email on June 18th, 2007, and just had to share it:

"I am writing on behalf of fans of the CW show Supernatural. Inspired by campaigns by fans of Veronica Mars, Buffy, Angel, and Roswell, the Supernatural fandom has come together to create Fandom Rocks (http://www.fandom-rocks.com). We will be collecting donations in the name of Supernatural fans and distributing them to fan-chosen charities throughout the year. The Lawrence Community Shelter was chosen as one of our first charities for your service to the community of Lawrence, Kansas, the hometown of the Winchester family in Supernatural."
    - Dana Stodgel

Fandom Rocks is a fan-run initiative to raise funds and awareness for charities around the globe. Inspired by similar campaigns in the Firefly, Buffy, Angel, and Veronica Mars fandoms and brought together by the CW’s Supernatual, fans of the CW show are asking you to join them in supporting the charities of the season. The charities are selected by the fans, and every six months two new charities receive the donations collected on Fandom Rocks. Fans are very excited at the prospect or working together to give to these causes. We hope you will join us. (from the Fandom Rocks website)

The Lawrence Community Shelter held a donation ceremony on Sunday, September 2nd, 2007, at 12:30 pm, on the front porch of the Lawrence Community Shelter, 214 W 10th St, Lawrence.

Dana Stodgel, of Illinois, representing Fandom Rocks, a website for fans of the CW television series Supernatural, will present a donation to the Lawrence Community Shelter from Supernatural fans from all over the world. The charity campaign for two chosen charities, the Lawrence Community Shelter and SOS Children's Villages, began June 18, 2007 and culminates September 1 with a goal of $2000.

Fans took the much-loved quote from Supernatural’s first season to heart when choosing the charities for the first campaign. Along with the geographic connection to Supernatural, the Lawrence Community Shelter's focus on families, children, and people in need - a major theme in the series - resonated with fans. As a result, two deserving charities with strong missions to improve the lives of people across the globe rose to the top of the list. The Lawrence Community Shelter provides safe shelter and comprehensive support services and programs that provide a path to a positive future for people experiencing homelessness and people who are at risk of homelessness. SOS Children’s Villages, an international charity operating in 132 countries and territories worldwide, will also receive donations raised during the first campaign. See COOL NEWS section below for more info.

Lawrence is the hometown of Supernatural's fictional Winchester family, two brothers who travel the country searching for their lost father while fighting supernatural threats (Supernatural airs on The CW, KCWE 29 or Sunflower channel 17). The spine-tingling journey of the Winchester brothers continues with the third season of Supernatural on The CW, premiering October 4, 2007.

UPDATE: Click on the link to read the Lawrence Journal-World article on Dana's visit. We enjoyed hosting Dana and her son, Jack. The donation campaign raised an awesome $2046.11, which was split between LCS and SOS Children's Villages. We also received an anonymous donation of $400 from a Supernatural fan through PayPal, because of the Fandom Rocks website, but the fan wanted the full donation to go directly to us. Thank you, Supernatural Super-Fan!

  • Fall Arts & Crafts Festival, Sunday, Sept 9, 12:00 - 5:00 pm, South Park, 1140 Massachusetts: LCS will be selling homemade pie by the slice or whole, coffee, and water during the event to raise money and awareness. Look for us in the food vendor area!

UPDATE: Thank you for helping us raise almost $1000 during the event. Many, many more thanks to all of the people and organizations who donated pies and time.

  • KU Law School 5K Charity Run, October 6: Patrick Watkins, a second-year law student and secretary of his class, plans to have half of the donations for the annual KU Law School 5K Charity Run go to LCS. The run takes place October 6 and usually makes at least $1,000. The other half goes to VanGo this year. We are hoping that this is a precedent-setting decision and that each year that money will come to LCS.
